Machine learning Engineer

Due to circumstances, the starting date for this position will be the 1st of July, 2020 at the earliest possibility. 

Amsterdam – We are looking for a machine learning engineer to join the News Personalisation Team. A team with about nine engineers, scientists, and research interns. The team is responsible for personalising the news products across major Dutch and Belgian news titles (Volkskrant, AD, Trouw, Parool, HLN, De Morgen and many others) owned by DPG Media. In particular, we currently work on 1) personalising push notifications, for which we have a real time recommendation pipeline running in production, and 2) building a search engine for historical articles, used by journalists. Everyone in the team is responsible for both training models and developing and maintaining a scalable, high-volume infrastructure.

In our team, we believe that no-one should be a bottleneck and that knowledge should spread across people as much as possible. We are looking for someone who enjoys working closely with their team members.

To stay up-to-date with current developments in machine learning, we organize a biweekly reading group where we discuss relevant papers at major ML conferences. You are encouraged to attend these conferences and relevant meetups. Additionally, we have research interns that write their master thesis with us that you are expected to (co)supervise.

As a machine learning engineer, the following will be at the core of your responsibilities:

  • Designing, developing, testing and productionalising ML models for user and content representation, recommendation, and search. 
  • Building and maintaining the high-scale infrastructure required for real-time news recommendation

Soft skills

  • Experience with an effective code review process
  • Experience with pair programming
  • General guidance of junior machine learning engineers
  • Scrum experience

Hard Skills

  • Up-to-date knowledge of, and experience with the latest developments in the field of machine learning
  • Experience with designing, developing, training, evaluating, deploying, and maintaining large scale ML systems
  • Experience with online evaluation, such as AB testing
  • Experience with Python, Bash, SQL, Scala
  • Experience with our stack: PostgreSQL, Kafka, Kubernetes, Redis, PySpark, Elasticsearch, Concourse
  • CI/CD experience
  • Lambda architecture
  • Experience in handling tens of thousands of data points per second
